The Roanoke Region offers the best of both worlds: mountains and water. Put the two together and welcome to paradise. With the largest freshwater lake in Virginia, as well as dozens of creeks and challenging rivers, there is no limit on the fun you can have on the water.
LAKES
Whether its sailing, fishing, waterskiing, parasailing, jet skiing, speed boating, party boating, or canoeing, you can do it in the Roanoke Region. So come on out, play, and get wet.
Carvin's Cove is a 12,000 acre lake offering recreational opportunities for small boats, fishing, and other recreational activities.
Claytor Lake is a 4,500 acre lake on the New River with a marina, three public boat ramps, and a public beach.
Lake Moomaw is a 2,500 acre lake with three boat ramps and much more.
Loch Haven Lake is a small private lake for corporate and member events.
Philpott Lake is a 3,000 acre lake with campsites and several public boat ramps. 540.629.2703
Smith Mountain Lake is a 20,600 acre lake with 500 miles of shoreline offering sailing, water skiing and wake boarding, jet skiing, paddling, and swimming. There are several public boat ramps and private marinas.
RIVERS AND CREEKS
Looking for some moving water? Try playing on the rivers and creeks throughout the Roanoke Region.
Blackwater River is an 8 mile float with scenic views.
Cowpasture River is a tributary of the James River running through Alleghany and Botetourt Counties.
Craig Creek is popular for kayaking, rafting, and paddling in Class I-II waters.Dunlap Creek features Class II-IV waters in Alleghany County.
Jackson River is a great boating and fishing destination in Alleghany County.
James River is a popular river for boating, canoeing, and kayaking. The largest drainage river in Virginia offers Class I to Class IV rapids.
New River is a great canoeing and kayaking spot featuring Class I to Class IV water.
Pigg River offers an eight mile float on Franklin County's first Blueway.
Roanoke River has great fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming.
Smith River has strong and challenging waters, especially when water is released from the dam.
