The Roanoke Valley grew up with the railroad. Norfolk & Western Railway (now part of Norfolk Southern) was founded here and the regional remains an important part of NS.

Norfolk, VA-based Norfolk Southern operates 21,500 route miles in 22 eastern states, the District of Columbia and the province of Ontario, serves 20 ports and connects with rail partners in the western United States and Canada.
