The Roanoke Region offers excellence in education at all levels. There are sixpublic school districts within the Roanoke Region. There is also a variety of private schools and special education options throughout the region. Roanoke also maintains advanced student and career-based training programs.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS
There are six public school systems within the Roanoke Region. Each system maintains competitive educational standards while providing unique opportunities for students.

Alleghany County Public Schools is a competitive public education system with fully accredited schools and received the 2008 Charles Edgar Clear Award for excellent schools from the Virginia Educational Research Association. EDUCATION ALTERNATIVES
Several school systems offer educational choices. Some of these programs may be open to students throughout the region at all grade levels.

Gifted/Specialty Programs. Unique learning experiences at schools throughout the Roanoke Region allow students to develop individual talents and interests. Programs include Computer Science; High Technology; Science; Mathematics and Computers; Aviation; Performing Arts; Visual Arts; Communications; Engineering and Aerospace.
Gereau Center for Applied Technology and Career Exploration. Located in Rocky Mount, it offers all Franklin County 8th graders a full semester of hands-on learning and exploration in a choice of eight modules representing the skills and career opportunities of the future: environmental/natural resources; arts; manufacturing; health & human services; engineering/architectural design; media design; legal science; and finance. 150 Technology Dr., Rocky Mount • 540.483.5446

International Baccalaureate Program. Available at Salem High School, the programs is one of only 500 such programs throughout 60 countries.
