Two international companies with locations in the Roanoke Valley made the top ten of the recently released 2012 Corporate Knights Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World ranking. Novozymes, a maker of enzyme-based products for cleaning, wastewater, and aquaculture applications located in the Roanoke County Center for Research and Technology, was ranked fourth in the global ranking. Atlas Copco, which operates a manufacturing plant and sales office on Shadwell Drive in Roanoke County, was ranked 10th.
The Global 100 is the most data-driven corporate sustainability assessment in existence and is based on 11 criteria including revenue per unit of energy expended, revenue per unit of greenhouse emissions, revenue per unit of water withdrawn, revenue per unit of waste generation, innovation, taxes paid, ratio of CEO compensation versus average employee compensation, safety, turnover, leadership diversity, and the practice of clean capitalism. The Global 100 program was launched in 2005 in Davos, Switzerland and is an authority on sustainability rankings.
