ACCESSIBLE
The transportation backbone of the Roanoke Region is Interstate 81 which runs north-south through the region. It is a heavy trucking corridor increasingly used as an alternative to busy I-95. I-64 (east-west) and I-77 (north-south) frame the region on its northern and southern ends. U.S. 460 provides four-lane divided highway east to the Port of Hampton Roads and in the other direction to Kentucky. U.S. 220, also four-lane divided highway, travels through the region on its way between New York and the southern tip of North Carolina.
